WHOSE BURGER WILL OWN THE THRONE?
The Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown is officially on. It’s all about finding the best Green Chile Cheeseburger in Santa Fe.
Smackdown finalist include:
Terra at the Four Seasons
Luminaria
Berts Burger Bowl
Cowgirl
Agave
…and a yet determined 7th contender.
As the finalists start honing their burgers for the final, there is a twist to the competition. In August KOB FM Morning Mayhem show host Carlos Duran will lead two live, green chile cheeseburger crawls to taste the 12 burgers that did not get nominated and choose a “Lucky #7” finalist to compete in the September 7th Green Chile Cheeseburger cook off. The crawl will be carried live on KOB 93.3 on Tuesday, August 13 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Friday, August 16th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Lucky #7 winner will be announced on Carlos’ morning show on Monday, August 26th.
More than a dozen restaurants took part in an initial planning meeting including Real Burger, Eldorado Hotel & Spa, Luminaria at Inn & Spa at Loretto, Del Charo at Inn of the Governors, Dr. Field Goods, Terra at the Four Seasons, Cowgirl BBQ, and the Ranch House. The final showdown will be between the six restaurants that receive the greatest number of votes.
Judging for the Overall Winner, plus a People’s Choice Award determined by popular vote, takes place at the Santa Fe Farmers Market on Saturday, September 7 2013 during the market’s Green Chile Harvest Festival. A panel of judges, including noted local cookbook author and all around great cook Cheryl Jamison, will judge each entry. Sample burgers will be made for public consumption to determine the People’s Choice Award.
The “burgers” don’t have to be beef. They can be fish or turkey or yak or lamb or something else; as long as they use cheese, New Mexican green chile, currently appear on the restaurant’s menu and remain there through the end of 2014.
All green chile aficionados are encouraged to get involved by voting for their favorite burger in town and taking part in the People’s Choice Award voting on September 7 2013.
